Electrochemical HydroDeHalogenation /continued
So the technology works, and works very well! Electrochemical HDH looks like an ideal solution to, for example, the remediation of PCBs:
- As of a year or two ago, in the UK there were c. 300,000,000 litres of transformer oil contaminated with 1000 - 2000 ppm PCBs.
- There is up to a further c. 2,000,000 litres of “Askral” oil with up to 70% PCBs.
- The current adsorption-based treatment costs are c. £0.80 per litre of ‘standard’ oil and £5.00 per litre of Askral.
- In addition, there is a charge of £1.00 per kg of transformer to ‘wash’ it; transformers range from 400 kg to 400 Tonnes.
- Incineration up to £2000 per tonne, adsorption up to £5000
per tonne.
- Electrochemical HDH estimated at up to £70 per tonne….
BUT- no company will admit to having a problem with haolgenated organics of any kind..........
